A Day In Orange County San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point

Sunday, April 6, 2014
We love random adventures, so thats what we did yesterday. It was Friday morning and we had nothing planned. So we drove down to San Juan Capistrano, a quaint little town just a few miles from the coast.

San Juan Capistrano is home to the mission, the swallows and the famous Swallows Inn bar. We loved the small town feel and the sense of culture in the community.

San Juan Capistrano was bustling with life as locals and cowboys prepared for the Swallows Day Parade, an annual celebration to welcome the swallows back to the city in Spring.
We planned on visiting the San Juan Capistrano Mission, one of many missions built along the coast of California between the 1700s and the 1800s. We both have been here before, separately. Rick visited when he was 10 years old, back in 1969. I visited when I was 10 years old, back in 2000.
Lucky for us, a nice passerby gave us free tickets!

On the grounds of the mission were areas where the padres, Spanish soldiers and the Acjachemen people worked hundreds of years ago.

In the garden were several vegetables, grown to feed those who lived at the mission. Farming was the most important industry for any mission.

Maize, barley and wheat were main staples at San Juan Capistrano. Back then, olives, grapes, melons and livestock, such as cattle, horses, mule, sheep and goats were also kept to sustain the mission.

Standing between two large tanning vats, used to soak animal hides.

Some of the mission has been renovated and restored, due to several earthquakes that have damaged many of the buildings and walls.

But the mission still holds its original integrity, so much that you feel like youre walking back in time while visiting the missions many adobe rooms.

The two smaller bells are original. They survived through the earthquake.

We fell in love with the courtyard, with its many beautiful spring flowers.

Cactus were in bloom all over the grounds...

And dancing bees ... steadily working away among the flowers.

These were my favorite.

And beautiful succulents ...

There was a beautiful fountain, smack dab in the middle of the mission. The fountain is not original, but definitely adds aesthetic appeal.

Rick wondered if these were the same koi that he saw was when he was 10 years old. Koi can live for hundreds of years.

The missions pantry. Some of the bottles were marked camphor, blue vitriol, sweet mercury and purging anise ... yikes.

More normal stuff. Dried blue elderberry, saltpeter and willow bark.

The mission still has an active church service. The alter is hundreds of years old, imported from Spain when the mission was first built.

The walls of the church that still stand today. We were awed by how big and thick the walls were, especially for 200 years ago.

Then we got hungry, so we drove down to Dana Point, just a few miles from San Juan Capistrano.

The pelicans know the fishing boats from the whale watching boats.

So naturally, they came to beg.

Jons Fish Market, home of some of the freshest seafood you can get. On account of the market being located right on the docks.

Yum.... :-)
For dinner, we had fish/scallops and chips. Sooo good. And so fresh!!

In conclusion: If you guys come out to California, dont just go to Disneyland. The best places are local and full of history. Were from Orange County, and a lot of people think places outside of the big city are boring and sleepy. But the thing is, Los Angeles is overrated. California is full of history and fun (real fun). You just gotta make an effort to find it.

Cristina Ferrare’s Big Bowl of Love

Sunday, April 6, 2014
Before I review Cristina Ferrare’s cookbook, Big Bowl of Love, I should make it clear that I dont do cookbook reviews. First, it would mean having to read one, and thats an exercise Ive never acquired a taste for. Oh, Ill flip through one; Ill flip through one with the best of them, but Id be lying if I told you it was anything more than to look at the photos, and skim some of the text.

So, when publishers pitch me to review the new hot cookbook, I usually decline politely, not wanting to waste their time and inventory (unless its near the holidays and I need a couple of things to re-gift - hey, weve all been there).

This request was different for one, actually two, reasons; Todd and Diane. They are the dynamic duo behind the fabulous feast for the eyes that is White on Rice Couple. Youve seen some of there amazing video work here before, and when I heard they had done all the photography for this cookbook, I couldnt say, "please send me one," fast enough. Predictably the pictures were gorgeous – technically excellent, and beautifully composed.

Then, something very odd happened. I started reading the cookbook. Not just glancing, actually reading and examining the recipes carefully. It seems as though Christina and I have very similar tastes, and it was apparent that this book was full of simple, delicious, and easy-to-make recipes that would actually come out as described and shown.

This is not always the case with celebrity chefs. I dont want to name names (like David Chang), but many times these big name books are long on style and short on performance. One read through Cristinas "Chicken Roasted to Perfection" recipe (pictured here), and I knew we were kindred spirits.

So, Im giving this book an enthusiastic thumbs-up. Its user-friendly, has a casual, relaxed feel to it, and features a nice collection of great-sounding dishes, presented beautifully. Anyway, dont take my word for it, go and check out the book for yourself, and as always, enjoy!

Original Banana Snacking Cake circa 2005

Saturday, April 5, 2014

This simple, straightforward, gluten-free banana cake is mighty tasty despite its humble unadorned appearance. If it came to a party it would be a wallflower. The shy bookworm. The sweet no one notices, lost as they are in the shuffle and glitz of more charismatic confections. She may not ever be the center of attention or the one you call upon to impress your boss, but she's the one you turn to when you need something satisfying.

And real.

And comforting.

And like lasting friendship that doesn't care about the superficial- if your shoes are out of style or your nails remain unmanicured- she is lovely sharing a mug of tea.

Lasagna

LASAGNA
Carrabbas Copycat Recipe

2 cups fresh ricotta
8 ounces grated Provolone
8 ounces grated Mozzarella
8 ounces grated Romano
1 egg
1/4 cup milk
1 tablespoon minced garlic
salt
ground black pepper
1/2 pound grated Parmesan cheese
1 package of lasagna noodles (any brand will do)
marinara sauce (may use marinara sauce or marinara meat sauce)

Make marinara sauce first, since the sauce takes some time to complete. (I usually use marinara meat sauce for this recipe but I like to add sausages also to the sauce.  The marinara sauce would work as well. See sidebar for recipes.)

Cook pasta and make filling: Once sauce is almost finished, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  In a medium sauce pan bring water to a boil. Once water is boiled add lasagna noodles. While noodles are cooking mix ricotta, provolone, mozzarella, and Romano cheese in a medium bowl. Once cheeses are evenly mixed add egg, milk, basil, and garlic. Again mix evenly and then season with salt and pepper.

To assemble the lasagna. In a deep dish lasagna pan, spread about 3 large spoonfuls of meat sauce. Then sprinkle grated cheese over sauce. Place noodles in a row on over sauce and cheese. Spread half the cheese filling evenly over the noodles. Add more meat sauce over cheese filing and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese over sauce.  Repeat the above process again, except this time make sure the rows of lasagna are opposite to the previous rows.  Then place one more layering of lasagna noodles on the top. Make sure this row is layered the same as the first row. Cover noodles completely with meat sauce and sprinkle with more mozzarella cheese.

Cook in oven for about forty-five minutes to an hour, or until sauce and cheese is boiling on the sides of the pan. Wait about ten minutes before serving.

Welp I Got The Tory Boots On Sale!

Friday, April 4, 2014
{Blouse: Equipment; Cami: Tibi; Leggings: H&M; Boots: Tory Burch; Bag: 3.1 Phillip Lim;
Shades: Thierry Lasry; Bracelets: J.Crew, David Yurman; Ring: YSL}

Member when I was lusting over these Tory Burch boots? Yeah, well, they went on MEGA sale, so I bought them. Merry Christmas to me and noone else, because I spent all my Christmas money on them.

I decided to wear them a couple weekends ago to celebrate the trying on of the first wedding gowns at Hitched in Georgetown with my MoH, Ashlee! We werent cray about any of the dresses, but it sure was fun getting nekkid in front of a stranger in the dressing room. Haha, jk, that was one of lifes most painful moments. Afterward, we celebrated absolutely nothing over brunch with the rest of the ladies from book club, where I enjoyed that fried chicken benedict I told you about yesterday.
HAHAHAHA, Hair, youre so funny!

*Big thanks to my bridesmaid Laura for playing photographer!
**And also shoutout to my other bridesmaid Jenna because she felt left out! Now you know the whole bridal party!!
